Don’t stand still or continuous learning and growth in Design
Often it's said that design in its current form is a young field, still finding its footing. And that's true. But you know what? It will never stabilize.
Design encompasses everything around us, and as long as the world exists, so will design. The world is constantly changing, and design will evolve with it because it's not just a part of change, it's also a response to those changes.
Needs, opportunities, tools, aesthetics, and approaches—all of these evolve over time. Even what's considered good practice can change. Just think about autoplaying music on websites or intrusive pop-ups—all of it seemed like a great way to grab users' attention, but in today's world, it's just annoying and distracting. In other words, the effect is quite the opposite.
Designers and design companies must be acutely aware of what's happening around them and be able to react. But why is it all so complicated when design is supposed to be something light and pleasant? The answer is simple—design doesn't exist in isolation.
What does this dynamism we speak of look like? Here are a few simple examples relevant to our industry:
- Growing demand for animation from graphic and web designers
- Understanding storytelling and strategy basics from brand designers
- Knowing how a website will be developed (for web designers)
- Popularization of tools like Framer, Webflow, Spline, and Midjourney. We used the latter two in the Flourish project, and we can't imagine achieving the same results within the same timeframe without these tools.
The list goes on, but as it's commonly said now, this is the new normal.
How should one react to this? Who should worry (if anyone should)?
The truth is, in today's world, if you're not evolving, you're not standing still; you're falling behind. And this applies to everyone—individuals and businesses alike.
If you're not enhancing your current skills, acquiring new knowledge, or trying out new tools, chances are you're losing competitiveness.
But there's no need to panic, thinking everyone should now be like a hamster on a wheel. Yes, continuous growth is a necessity now, but it's also exciting! It inspires and opens new doors; it propels us forward.
Everyone can choose their own pace, priorities, and direction of self-development. You don't need to grasp everything at once but it's crucial to gain a development-orientated mindset. Growth and development are neither scary nor painful. Healthy food starts to taste good when it's no longer seen as a punishment ;)
Our latest project – Flourish, embodied everything described above — we learned a lot, stepped out of our comfort zone, and tried new things. With this project, we took a step forward, and miraculously, the comfort zone widened.
We'll continue to grow and cultivate this approach within the company, and we encourage you to stay with us on this journey but also start your own.
